Roleplay Etiquette

Important things to know while Role-Playing

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with these rules.

Here at H:YS we’re accepting of role-play dialogue of all lengths and styles. Everyone is welcome to role-play in a manner that is comfortable to them as long as they follow a few basic guidelines. The most important rule being politeness and tolerance. Everyone needs to be, at all times, tolerant of others role-play styles. No one has the right to tell anyone else what style to role-play. We ask that everyone do their best at attempting to stay consistent with those roleplaying nearby you.  Please try to mold your RP to the scene you have entered.

If your style is to Paragraph Role play and you have entered a scene (A group of 3 or more) where people are role playing with one-liners. Please try to mold to their style of role play and do the same, if that is hard for you to do simply walk away. Do not feel disrespected if they disregard posting order or post over you.

Furthermore, if you are a One Line Emoter or Semi Paragraph role player, and you walk into a scene (A group of 3 or more) for Paragraph Role players. Try to mold to their role playing style or simply walk away. Respect that they might have posting order and kindly ask how that goes. (More info on Posting Order Below)

At the same time, both groups of role players need to absolutely respect one another and take the time to read through posts if you are role playing with others. It doesn’t matter what style of role play you have, but if you are interacting with people it is key to read what their characters are doing and react accordingly. If you feel confused or lost in any way, please politely IM the characters you are role playing with and ask for clarifications.

All in all, we wish that all forms of role playing styles have a home in H:YS. Be flexible and adjust to those around you, this way everyone learns and grows together as how a school should.

Acceptable forms of role-play:

Basic One-Line RP:

”Chloe Campbell wept.”

”Chloe Campbell looks around, “Oh. Maxwell Are you here?”

”What do you think you are doing?! Get away from those drapes they are completely infested with doxies” The girl shrieked.

… and so on.

Semi-Para RP:

Chloe Campbell shuffles through her bag and would grab out a big shiny apple then would walk towards Professor Ravencroft with a big grin, “For you Professor Ravencroft!” Then Chloe would turn around and smile as she walked away with a big goofy grin upon her face, her bright red hair bouncing from the curl she had put into it that morning.

Paragraph, or Para- RP:

Chloe Campbell walked into the room looking around a bit before she sat her bag onto the floor. She would pluck out her wand, her quill and some parchment before getting out her book. Chloe sighed a bit heavily flipping through the pages as Professor Livius went on about tea tree oil and the great effect it has on the sinuses. She looked up then just in time to see Professor Livius point her finger towards Chloe and call for her to answer a question she had not even been paying attention for. “Oh.. Professor Livius, what had you said again?” She gulped in hoping that Livius would not take away twenty points or any points for that matter from Hufflepuff for Chloe’s not paying attention for that brief moment of getting settled into class.

Examples of unacceptable chat room style RP

Corwin: Hi

Corwin: How are you?

Corwin: I’m a Gryffindor.

Corwin: What’s up

Corwin: ……

Corwin: I’m going to potions

Corwin: Want to come?

Corwin: Cool Pygmy Puff.

Corwin: Bring it to potions too.

Corwin: Bye!

Please note: One-line role-play is fine so long as you include some sort of basic emote as mentioned above. The above example is what we call Chat Boxing. There is no emote whatsoever and the only role play that involves is chatting.

If an Admin see’s this type of RP, or hears of the RP from another student, you will be personally messaged and reminded to review the rules.

Posting Order:

It’s important to keep a posting order while role-playing at H:YS. This means that you should wait for your turn while in a group scene. A large scene, such a Breakfast/Dinner and a Class, you don’t need to follow a posting order, save for the one you are in with the people around you. However in more “intimate” scenes, those that include more than 2 roleplayers, it’s politely to wait for everyone else to post before you do.

Another thing that is super important is to keep OOC chat to a minimum. Correcting mistakes is fine, but useless chatter in OOC is uncalled for and can be annoying to those around you! SO please, try to refrain from excessive OOC chat in Local Chat. Take it to IM’s, or the OOC chat group we have for H:YS. If you are not in the group, you should join it.

No one should feel forced to role-play in any specific style. There is room for both para-rp as well as one line emote style role-play here at H:YS. If you don’t care for another’s role-play style, please politely extract yourself from the scene. If someone is telling you OOC how to role-play, please let one of the admins know.
